Objective 2: Installation of one hand pump with proper platform for 3 to 4 families to supply safe water to the vulnerable families.

Objective 3: Ensure household level minimum contribution to install hand pumps for future sustainability and management.

Project Rationale/Justification:

About 90% of the families of the mentioned working area depends on agriculture for their livelihood such as: agricultural labor, share croppers, by which they can earn about BDT 30,000 to BDT 60,000 per year or BDT 2500 to BDT 5000 per month. This income is not enough for a family maintanance, therefore most of the young man migrate to the big cities to find work such as: rickshaw pulling and women to readymade garments industries, but the oldaged, widows, PWD and other women headed families remains with yearly deficit and sometimes reduced their meal intake by 2 and or 1 meal per day. These families don’t have the capacity to install a Hand Pump to supply safe drinking water for the family members.

Although national data projected that 97% of access to safe drinking water has been achieved within rural areas of Bangladesh, but according to observation and discussion with the personnel of Department of Public Health and Engineering (DPHE) about 10 families (45 people) has access to one Hand Pump. Therefore competition in accessing safe drinking water always time consuming and sometime become social problems. The families maintain their other household water use such as bathing, cooking, washing clothes, washing cooking materials in the ponds water which causes of illness among the family members.
